Kuma Shochu World Renowned Tradition Continues Over 500 Years

Continuing 500 years of history, Kuma Shochu is one part of culture in the rice growing area of Hitoyoshi. There are 28 distilleries in Hitoyoshi Kuma each with its own personality. The distilleries produce numerous varieties of Kuma Shochu including mild, strong and blends using ingredients such as vegetables, milk and coffee. Shochu masters work tirelessly to produce the best flavors and aromas. The World Trade Organization (WTO) granted Kuma Shochu geographical protection in 1995. (Scotch Whiskey and Champagne are similarly protected).
